Understanding How OCX Affects Your Registry

There are many things that can mess up your computer’s registry causing your system to run slow, perhaps freeze, and sometimes you’ll get the blue screen of death.  OCX is one of those file extensions that can really mess your registry up.  But why?

First lets look at what the OCX controls are.  OCX is short for OLE control extension and it’s actually an independent program that can be accessed by Windows, the registry, and other programs.  OCX controls are Microsoft’s second generation of control architecture.

Before OCX can be used it has to be registered with the Registry, and if you uninstall the associated program the OCX should be removed from the Registry.  If multiple programs are using an OCX file the system might not know about all of them.  If you uninstall one program it may delete the OCX library that was in use by the program it was not aware of causing it to stop working.  Copying them back doesn’t always work.

When the OCX is not properly removed from the registry when it is no longer needed problems can occur in the registry and since the registry is like the nervous system of your operating system having it not function properly can cause a system crash.
